Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

Overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine may be seen in a number of settings:

  1. Anatomical abnormalities (i.e. diverticula, fistulae, surgical blind loop, ileocecal resections)
  2. Motility disorders (i.e. scleroderma, diabetes mellitus, post-radiation enteropathy, small intestinal pseudo-obstruction)
  3.  Multifactorial causes (i.e. acid suppression, hypochlorhydria, immunodeficiency, chronic pancreatitis)

Symptoms:

Symptoms may include bloating, diarrhea, weight-loss and vitamin deficiencies. Many patients also often complain of fatigue.

Testing:

SIBO TESTING NYC offers SIBO Testing via Lactulose-based Hydrogen Breath Testing. SIBO testing can be done in-office or at home after a consultation to determine if testing is clinically indicated.  While not all patients will have SIBO, treatment for bloating and diarrhea, or other symptoms perceived to be related to the digestive tract, can be achieved by further careful investigation.
